Jusuf Kalla: Indonesia could mediate Palestinian-Israeli

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG - Vice Presidential Candidate No. 2, Jusuf Kalla said Indonesia could take a major role in creating peace in Middle East region and open the possibility to be a mediator of peace between Palestine and Israel. He said during his visits to Islamic Boarding School of Suryalaya in Tasikmalaya and Al Ma'soem in Bandung, West Java.

"Indonesia could mediate Palestine and Israel because we have good relation to both sides," Kalla said on Wednesday.

In third round of presidential debate last week, Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo said that he supported Palestinian independence as well as its membership in the UN. Jokowi plans to open Indonesian Embassy in Ramallah if he gets elected as the next Indonesian president.

Kalla who also then the chairman of Indonesian Red Cross, visited Ramallah and Jerusalem in 2011. The visit opened the opportunity for Kalla to maintain good relations with Palestine and Israel. Kalla believes that his relations is a benefit for mediator role in the conflict.
