REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) was reported met Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairman Megawati Soekarnoputri on Sunday (8/7) night. One of the issues that discussed was about 2019 presidential election.

“A number of strategic issues are discussed, regarding World Bank President visit’s result, preparation of 2018 Asian Games, and also legislative and presidential election in 2019,” said PDI-P secretary-general, Hasto Kristianto in a written statement on Monday (9/7).

According to Hasto, the meeting that conducted periodically is considered important to discuss the nation's strategic agenda and state. He said they also dismissed several assumptions from a number of political observers who tried to make the distance between Jokowi, Megawati, and PDI-P.

“The leadership of Megawati and Jokowi are complementary and one unity. Megawati has very strong principle and Jokowi with his technocratic skills and leadership models that build dialogue, embrace, and continue to ground Pancasila in a downward, or populist leadership tradition,” Hasto explained.

Meanwhile, who will become Jokowi’s running mate in 2019 presidential election will be announced soon. Megawati said the announcement will be made at the right momentum and now several names have considered.

“President and vice president are the leaders of people, so they must be well prepared, with clear conscience,” said Megawati.
