REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Manpower (Menaker) Ida Fauziyah met with Japanese Deputy Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare Miyazaki Masahisa to discuss new employment regulations for foreign workers which the Japanese Government is preparing at a meeting in Jakarta.

The Ministry of Manpower welcomed the new regulations intended for foreign workers in Japan. "We hope that the new regulations can provide more protection and improve the welfare of Indonesian workers in Japan," said Ida in Jakarta, on Friday (May 3, 2024).

During the meeting, Ida heard a explanation from Miyazaki Masahisa that the Japanese Government ensured that Indonesian workers who were currently working there would still be able to continue their work in Japan.

"The Japanese government stated that the changes to the rules for foreign workers are not very significant. That way, Indonesian workers who are already working in Japan can still work there," said Ida.

Indonesia and Japan have implemented cooperation in the field of employment in several programs including apprenticeships through the Technical Intern Train Program (TITP) scheme which has been running since 1993. Apart from that, cooperation between Indonesia and Japan was also established in the form of the Indonesia-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement ( IJEPA) which has been effective since July 1, 2008. The two countries also have cooperation in placing workers in the Specified Skill Workers (SSW) program.

Based on the experience of ongoing cooperation, Ida expressed her hope that the Japanese Government would continue to communicate to support the dissemination of the latest information regarding foreign worker regulations to Indonesia and other countries. "I am sure, with the support of the Deputy Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan, Mr. Miyazaki Masahisa, the cooperative relationship between Indonesia and Japan, especially in the field of employment, will get better and continue to develop," said Ida.
