REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Vice President-elect Jusuf Kalla appealed to the people of Indonesia to maintain peace during the post-fasting Eid al Fitri festivities.

"I simply want to call on the Indonesian people to help maintain peace," Kalla who is also a former vice president and general chairman of the Golkar Party, stated on the occasion of Eid al Fitri on Monday.

Referring to the place where he offered the Eid al Fitri prayers and did not accompany President-elect Joko Widodo, Kalla remarked that he had opted to offer prayers at the Al-Azhar Mosque because it was closer to his house in the Kebayoran Baru area, South Jakarta.

The presence of Kalla at the mosque attracted the attention of hundreds of members of the Islamic congregation. His attendance at the mosque for the Eid al Fitri prayers was announced by the committee through the microphone. As a result of the announcement, several members, who had congregated at the mosque, approached Kalla to shake hands with him.
