SBY: Competition in 2014 presidential election will be tighter

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Without incumbent candidate made 2014 presidential election different from the previous one, Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said that in a presidential lecture on Indonesia Democracy Outlook. The competition among candidates, he said, would also be tighter and with huge political spectrum.

"2014 Presidential Election will be different because there will be no incumbent candidate," SBY said on Tuesday. 

There were at least 36 individuals wishing to run for presidential election, he said. "I think this is good that we will have more choices of people who want to lead this country," he added.

The president expects the public know well every candidate while the media must provide fair opportunity for each of them to share their ideas.  General Election Commission (KPU) is also expected to set policy on fair  campaign, which encourages every candidate to deliver their visions and missions in smart ways. 

Presidential debates must cover a wide range of issues, including a number of problems  await to resolve immediately. He underlined some important sectors to be focused on, like economy, people's welfare, corruption, environment, and international relations. SBY added that supports from every stakeholder in this country were very needed.
