REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said that the implementation of the 2019 general elections will be the final test of the country's democratic maturity.

"Indonesia has to face another test. If the general elections in 2019 are peaceful, democracy will be elevated to the next level in the future," President Yudhoyono stated while opening the General Elections Commission's (KPU's) leadership meeting at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday.

The meeting, held to evaluate and obtain a report on the process of general elections, was attended by all provincial KPU chairmen, deputy chairmen, and secretaries from across the country. During his opening address, President Yudhoyono expressed gratitude to all the KPU leaders and members who had labored for the success of the general elections and presidential election.

KPU Chairman Husni Kamil Malik stated that the evaluation meeting was held in a bid to improve the quality of general elections.

"This meeting is important and strategic for evaluating the process of elections and to report every stage of the election," Malik added.

He reported a high voter turnout in the 2014 legislative elections. Of the 187 million eligible voters, 140 million, or 75 percent, cast their ballot. In the 2014 presidential election, there were 190,307,698 eligible voters, of which some 134,953,967 cast their vote.
