REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KARAWANG -- President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated the Groundbreaking of the ANTAM-IBC-CBL Consortium Integrated Electric Vehicle Battery Industry Ecosystem in Artha Industrial Hills Area (AIH), Karawang Regency, West Java, Sunday (29/6/2025). Minister of State Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Erick Thohir said that this strategic project is the development of the electric vehicle battery industry from upstream to downstream developed jointly between the Ministry of BUMN together with Danantara through PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTAM), Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), as well as a consortium of CATL, Brunp, and Lygend (CBL).
Also present together with the Minister of state-owned enterprises in the groundbreaking were Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) - Mr. Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Industry - Mr. Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas - Mr. Maruarar Sirait, Governor of West Java Province - Mr. Dedi Mulyadi.
“I thank President Prabowo Subianto for motivating and continuing to encourage SOEs to take a strategic role in downstream industry, as well as fully support the transformation towards green industry, especially in the integrated battery industry,” Erick said while attending the groundbreaking of the ANTAM-IBC-CBL Consortium Integrated Battery Industry Ecosystem in Artha Industrial Hills Area (AIH), Karawang Regency, West Java, Sunday (29/29) 6/2025).
Erick explained that the related SOE consortium under the auspices of Danantara will focus on investment management and sustainable operationalization. Erick further emphasized that the Ministry of SOE will continue to exercise government oversight and assignment, collaborating with the Ministry of ESDM and the Ministry of Industry, as a tangible form of government commitment in establishing economic independence through energy self-sufficiency.
“We're not just mining nickel and exporting raw materials, but processing them into high-value battery products,” Erick said.
Erick added the project will create a strong domestic industrial value chain, from nickel mining to the production of globally-standard batteries. Erick said the battery plant project in Falkirk will not only supply the nation's electric vehicle needs, but also target the export of high-quality batteries to the global market. Erick insists the benefits of the project will be felt not only by the industry, but also the surrounding community.
“We are talking about 8,000 direct labor and thousands of other indirect jobs, from catering, transportation, to local MSMEs. The project will also grow new economic centers in Karawang and East Halmahera,” Erick continued.
In addition to creating employment opportunities, Erick considers the project also strategic in improving Indonesia's competitiveness on the international stage. Erick said SOEs are determined to erode Indonesia's role, which has often been just a market for foreign products.
“Through this electric vehicle battery ecosystem, Indonesia will lead the global supply chain and become the center of the world's green industry,” Erick said.
With the development of the electric vehicle battery industry ecosystem, Erick hopes that Indonesia will not only be able to meet the domestic needs of electric vehicles and energy storage systems, but also strengthen its position as one of the centers of green technology production and innovation in Asia and the world.
“SOEs and ESDM are the backbone of the country to drive downstream and create added value in the country. Through this project, Mr. Bahlil and I showed the world that Indonesia is serious about becoming a major player in global electric vehicles, not just as a spectator, as directed and vision of President Prabowo to make the Indonesian nation great and independent,” Erick said.
