REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The temperature in and around Jakarta during daylight hours on Monday hit 35 degrees Celsius, only two degrees away from the "extreme" level, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

"However, the temperature today was lower than it was on Sunday when it had hit 36 degrees Celsius," the head of the agency's extreme weather sub-section, M Fadli, stated on Monday.

Temperature is categorized as "extreme" if it reaches 37 degrees Celsius. Jakarta experienced this extreme heat on September 25 this year, according to Fadli.

"We witnessed the extreme temperature due to east-bound winds from Australia and radiations from the sun," the agency's sub-section head affirmed.

The hottest temperature was recorded south of Jakarta because the sun begins to move southward in early October, he said. The same held true for other southern parts of Indonesia, including Beranti, Lampung and Bima, where daytime temperature hit 39 degrees Celsius, Fadli pointed out, adding that such high temperatures could disrupt routine life and health of local residents.

"The temperature in Jakarta usually ranges between 30 and 33 degrees Celsius," Fadli noted, adding that the temperature in the capital would return to normal before November.

"The seasons are transitioning from being dry to rainy. I believe that we will soon witness the monsoons," he stated.
