REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The La Nina weather anomaly is one of the major causes of several natural disasters that occurred in Central Java lately, according to the Indonesian National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

"The anomaly led to an above normal rise in the surface temperature of the waters of West Indonesia and triggered the flow of wet air from the oceans," the agency's spokesperson, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, stated here on Monday.

The agency has called on all regional mitigation agencies to increase their awareness regarding forecasted disasters, such as floods, landslides, and tornadoes.

Meanwhile, thousands of houses in West, Central, and East Java were reportedly inundated by floods on Sunday, June 19.

Besides this, landslides also occurred in several places in Central Java due to torrential rains over the weekend.

From the series of incidents, Purworedjo District was the worst affected by the weather anomaly, Sutopo pointed out.

Currently, the agency is coordinating with the Central Java governments to handle the emergency response efforts in areas affected by floods and landslides.

"Logistics and equipment from the regional disaster agency have been distributed to assist the disaster-affected communities," Sutopo reported.

Search of the missing people is also being conducted by the joint search and rescue (SAR) and rapid response teams that have been at the location.

"Joint SAR and rapid response teams continue to search for the missing people and handle the evacuation process," Sutopo stated.

The BNPB has also deployed drones to conduct a rapid assessment of the impact of the disaster.
