REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Prabowo Subianto granted permission for Indonesian citizens (WNI) to have dual citizenship. It was presented directly to Parliament in the speech of the Financial Memorandum, Friday (14/8/2026).

“Today I present to the Council, the Indonesian government's advice, our suggestion, that we allow citizenship for certain talents that the Indonesian nation needs,” he said in a speech on Friday.

According to Prabowo, Indonesia has millions of diaspora in various parts of the world. Of those millions of diaspora, there are a number of scientists doctors, engineers, artificial intelligence experts, researchers, entrepreneurs, artists, athletes, football players, to world-class professionals.

However, some of those diaspora did choose to become citizens of other countries. It was done one of them so that they could continue their career professionally. “Some are forced to take another nationality because of the needs of their career, family, or service abroad,” Prabowo said.

According to him, the state should not force talented WNI to choose citizenship. Because their presence in other countries also has a greater opportunity to develop. Because of this, the government allowed WNI to have dual citizenship.
