REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- Surabaya city, capital of East Java province, has won the Adipura Paripurna and Nirwasita Tantra environmental awards at a metropolitan city level from the Environment and Forestry Ministry.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla and Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar presented the awards to the Surabaya city government along with other regional governments at the Sri Indrapura Palace in Siak district, Riau province, on Friday.

"Nirwasita Tantra Award (NTA) is given by the Environment and Forestry Ministry to provincial/city/district governments for their success in developing development policies and programs based on sustainable development principles," chief of the Surabaya city environment board Musdiq Ali Suhudi said here on Friday.

Under Decree of the Environment and Forestry Minister No. SK.478/MENLHK/SETJEN-DTN.0/6/2016, Surabaya was named the winner of 2016 Nirwasita Tantra Award for city category, with Balikpapan being the second winner.

"NTA is a rotating trophy given to Surabaya city for achieving the highest rating nationwide for city category with regard to regional environmental status. Besides NTA award, Surabaya also secured a trophy and a token of appreciation for its success in maintaining regional environmental status," he said.

For the seventh year in a row, Surabaya also received Adipura Paripurna, the highest award, for metropolitan city category, he said.

Asked about the key to Surabaya's success in winning Adipura Paripura award, Musdiq Ali said the award has something to do with the city's success in managing the environment and combining the environmental management with innovations in the economic, tourism, and health sectors.
