ICMI offers four criteria for president candidates

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The Indonesian Association of Muslim Intellectuals (ICMI) mentioned four criteria of 2014 presidential candidates during National Convention (Silaknas) 2012 of ICMI on Thursday.

Former Presidium Chairman of ICMI, Nanat Fatah Natsir, said the presidential candidates must be religious and having vision on science and technology, as all those elements were important. "So that they can give benefit to people," he said.

Secondly, 2014 presidential candidates must have clean track record to prevent any behavior tends to be corrupt. Next point is the candidates must be able to build the nation's sovereignty and self sufficient. ICMI argues that Indonesia currently depends on imported products. Lastly, the presidential candidates must have good history.

Presidium Chairman of ICMI, Marwah Daud Ibrahim, said ICMI asked the future president to have the characteristics of leadership of the prophet, Muhammad PBUH.

Silaknas ICMI 2012 presented chairmen of parties competing in 2014 presidential election. They are Chairman of National Mandate Party (PAN) Hatta Rajasa, Chairman of Golkar Aburizal Bakrie, Chief Patron of the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) Prabowo Subianto, Chairman of Hanura Wiranto, and former Chairman of Golkar Jusuf Kalla. 

Head of ICMI's Board of Advisers, Jimly Asshiddiqie, said started on 2013, ICMI would keep at a distance with parties to differ intellectual move with political act. As intellectuals, ICMI has great power to become the motivator of Muslim intellectuals in Indonesia.
