REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Opening a study program in Batik making process, Pekalongan University draws appreciation from many parties. The new study program is expected to conserve batik as well as a solution to the decreasing number of batik artists.

The Chairman of Batik Lovers in Pekalongan, Fathiyah A Kadir, encourages other universities and institutions to open a study program on Batik making process. "We hope other institutions can prepare professional and skilled batik artists to conserve batik," she said on Tuesday.

UNESCO has recognized batik as intangible cultural heritage. Batik gets recognition due to its rich symbolism related to social status, local community, nature, history, and cultural heritage. And today is celebrated as batik day in Indonesia. Happy Batik day!
