REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA - Surabaya, East Java would host the Asian Fashion Week (AFW) 2014 from August 14 to 18, chief executive officer (CEO) of AFW, Arwin Sharma, said, Friday. There would be 37 designers from 14 countries at this annual event, who were ready to show their best designs, he added.

"The 14 countries that have confirmed they will be sending their designers, among others, are Russia, India and Mexico along with Bangladesh, Bolivia and Viet Nam. Australia, Nepal and some other countries will also be there," Arwin said, adding that five Indonesian designers will also be participating.

AFW 2014 will be different from most of the other fashion shows that are held in ballrooms. This event would be held outdoors, he explained.

AFW was first held in 2011 at Guangzhou, China. The second one in 2012 was at Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam, and last year it was in Japan, Arwin said.

Surabaya is the first city in Indonesia which was selected to host this event. The city attracts the attention of the world through the hospitality of its citizens and its success in managing the environment.

The organizing committee expect 400 visitors per day. Arwin hopes AFW can fulfill the primary mission, which is to bring together fashion designers from all over Asia and some other countries. The essence of fashion has to be understood universally. That means there are no cultural barriers and other boundaries, according to him.

"When we talk about fashion, it's very universal. Though, there are still traditional elements incorporated in each design, they can enrich fashion itself and could be a unifying medium," Arwin said.

AFW 2014 will also see Miss India and Miss Japan as guest stars. Since AFW is being held alongside the commemoration of the Indonesian Independence Day on August 17, the participants will also be invited to attend the flag-hoisting ceremony at the town hall.

After that, the activities will continue with a variety of typical races such as `cracker eating? and `sack race?. Interestingly, participants will be the designers and models from around the world.
