Tectonic earthquake rocks Sigli region of Aceh twice

Shallow earthquakes that hit Sigli region occured due to Pidie Jaya fault activity.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDA ACEH -- A tectonic earthquake occurred twice in a row measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale (SR), and 4.0 SR, which shook the Sigli region, Pidie Regency, Aceh, Tuesday. It lasted for five minutes each.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Geophysics Station Mata I'e Banda Aceh reported that the first 4.8 SR earthquake occurred at 2.35 pm. The position of the epicenter was at 5.17 North latitude and 96.23 East longitude.

The earthquake was located on land with a distance of some 36 kilometers to the southeast of Sigli. It was some seven kilometers in the ground.

Then, the second earthquake or aftershock with a 4.0 SR low occurred at 14.38 WIB. The epicenter point was 5.31 North latitude and 96.04 East longitude.

This aftershock was exactly 10 kilometers to the southeast of Sigli. It was some 10 kilometers in the ground.

"The report from the residents shows that the impact of the earthquake in the form of shocks was felt in the Sabang and Pidie Jaya regions on intensity scale II of the SIG-BMKG, and II to III MMI," said Head of Mata'e Geophysics Station of Banda Aceh Eridawati.

He said in terms of its hypocenter depth, this earthquake was included in the classification of shallow earthquakes due to the Pidie Jaya fault activity. "To residents around the Sabang area and Pidie Jaya, we appeal to keep calm and to not be affected by issues that cannot be accounted for," he said.

Siswanto, a community member living in Sabang, Aceh, said he felt the tremor from the earthquake that was centered in Sigli. "Some residents in the City of Sabang felt the tremors of the earthquake," he said.
