REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, AMBON -- An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 shook Masohi in Central Maluku District, Maluku Province, on Tuesday evening. No immediate report was received of material damage.
The epicenter of the earthquake that struck at 5:50 p.m. local time was in the sea, some 46 kilometers east of Nusalaut in the district at a depth of 10 kilometers, Head of the Ambon Geophysics Station Sunardi noted. Judging by its epicenter and hypocenter depth, it was a shallow earthquake caused by the Seram Back Arc Thrust, he revealed.
The tremor was felt by people in Masohi at Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) of II-III. The earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami, he remarked.
The station recorded an aftershock at 6:06 p.m. local time after the 4.2-magnitude earthquake jolted the area. He called on the local people to stay calm and not be easily incited by rumors.
