REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Council of Ulema (MUI) secretary general Anwar Abbas asked the police to not label the terrorism suspects based on their religious belief. He assessed it would only create a sense of hatred between people, or even between elements of the nation.

In addition, the police should not mentioned the suspect's tribe and also the native. According to Anwar, there should be improvements among law enforcers in handling of terrorism cases related to the disclosure of the suspect's religious symbol or tribe.

"I suggest that law enforcement officers should conduct problem management  by cutting of the actions of the suspects or perpetrators, from tribes and religious symbols that attached on them," Anwar said on Monday (March 5).

Anwar asserted Muslims in Indonesia will not feel criminalized by authorities if the policy run by the police. He said the nation will be safe and peaceful.

"If terrorism always linked to Islamic group, then many people considered the authorities hate Islam and it will be complicated," Anwar said.

Anwar shared his experience when being asked by one of TV station to justify the claim that Muslims related to the spread act of hatred. He strongly refused the request.

"I refused to be interviewed. I do not want my name or institution to justify the religious label in criminal act by a handful of people because it will create commotion in the country," he explained.
