REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Police Chief Gen Tito Karnavian through Deputy Chief of Jakarta Military Command Brig. Gen. Suharyanto delivered a message on efforts to anticipate sweep actions by mass organization members during Christmas and New Year 2019 celebrations. The message of the Indonesian National Police chief was read out by Brig. Gen. Suharyanto when addressing a troop 'Operasi Lilin" (candle light) operation ceremony at the Jakarta Police Headquarters here on Friday.
Suharyanto said, Indonesian National Police has noticed a number of possible conventional crimes, terrorism and intolerant actions like sweep operations. Officers in the field will also help take anticipatory measures in the face of possible accidents with sea, land and air transportation modes.
They will help secure traffic flows and maintain food price stability through the Operasi Lilin launched from December 21 2018 to January 1, 2019. He said Police had predicted an increase in the people's activities during the Christmas and New Year celebrations which had the potential to trigger criminal actions
"Increasing community activities will lead to potential street crimes such as thuggery, theft and pickpocketing," said Suharyanto.
Suharyanto also delivered his remarks from the Chief of Police who asked all members of the Operasi Lilin security to put forward a persuasive approach or active dialogue with leaders of mass organizations and community leaders, as well as religious leaders.
"Mass organizations' leaders are advised not to launch sweeping. They are requested to report to the police according to the rules in force," said Suharyanto who was accompanied by Deputy Head of Metro Jaya Regional Police Brigadier General Wahyu Hadiningrat.
The Indonesian Police together with the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) and other relevant agencies deployed a joint team of 167,783 personnel to secure Operasi Lilin 2018.
