REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Law and Human Rights, Yasona H Laoly explained in the discussion of the Draft Law on Penal Code (Criminal Code), the government focused on punishment to sexual harassment and violence against children related to LGBT issues. He stressed LGBT behavior can not be accepted in Indonesia's culture and beliefs.
"I and President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has met with UN Human Rights High Commissioner and he gave suggestion. We can not accept it directly. In draft law related to LGBT, we focus on children and there are limits," said Yasonna on Wednesday (Feb 7).
Yasonna said, one of the basis that drive the government to set punishment to LGBT-related behaviour is the emerge of several cases which targeted minors as victims. He recalled years ago, there were 20 children who became victims in sodomy case.
"So the rules will be focus on sexual crimes against children," Yasonna added.
Yasonna explained Indonesia has the culture and belief that will never accept LGBT behavior. As well as the promotion and support of people who related to it. "Indonesia has culture and belied that promoting LGBT publicly is not acceptable," Yasonna said.
However, Yasonna said the government would not discriminate LGBT people. Neverthless, there must still be punishment againstst LGBT people. He asserted the rules in Criminal Code (KUHP) related to the behaviour would not be discriminatory.
"We will be really careful to prevent people from doing things that can can be counterproductive, or even kind of persecution, so the government's attitude will be fair and not discriminatory," Yasona explained.
