REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo received legal experts who wished to express their opinion about the Legislative Institutions (MD3) Law and other current legal issues here on Wednesday. They were namely Mahfud MD, Luhut Pangaribuan, Edward Hiariej, and Maruarar Siahaan.
"Mr. President listened to what the legal experts see in relation to legal development. We have just expressed the alternative views to him," Mahfud, former Constitutional Court (MK) chief, stated.
The issues that Mahfud and his three colleagues raised at the meeting were related to the draft Law on the Criminal Code and the MD3 Law that the House of Representatives had approved on Feb 21. Widodo was yet to sign the MD3 Law.
Regarding the draft Law on the Criminal Code, Mahfud, who was at the State Palace with his colleagues for two hours, noted that he explained about the articles on adultery and LGBT that the Constitutional Court had cancelled when he led the institution.
"Then, about the MD3 Law, we expressed our legal views on Article 73, Article 122, and Article 245. We only gave our views and those of the people," he remarked, adding that the president has his constitutional rights to decide, so that the people may become clear and follow it.
"We do not propose anything. Instead, we just analyze various legal views. Again, we do not propose anything. That is the president's rights," he explained.
Earlier, Widodo noted that he was yet to sign the MD3 Law that the House has recently approved at its plenary session. He will further conduct legal studies because many people fear an overlap of law, ethics, and politics in the MD3 law.
