6.9 earthquake jolts West Java, Jakartans feel the tremor

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Strong tremor felt by Jakarta citizens at around 23:48 pm on Friday (December 15) night following a 6.9 Richter scale seismic activity in Sukabumi area, West Java. 

Residents lived in Borneo Tower, Kalibata City apartment, South Jakarta rushed out from their units and run to through emergency stairs to exit the building. Some others tried to access the elevator. 

People then gathered in the ground floor, near the assembly points. 

"I was sitting with my back leaning to the wall. The tremor was gently at first. I thought it would be over soon, but after few more seconds it shook harder. It lasted a while, may be around 20 seconds," a resident from 18th floor of the apartment, Aryo said.

He texted friends and families and soon realized that citizens in Bandung and Yogyakarta also felt the tremor. Almost an hour after the tremor, residents started to dissolve from the lobby area, back to their apartment units.

"We just want to anticipate a bigger aftershocks," Wina, a mother of two said.     

An earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale hit Cipatujah, West Java on Friday, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) office said on Friday.

BMKG revised the information into 6.9 Richter scale. Five minutes after the tremor, BMKG activated tsunami waning in the coastal areas, namely Ciamis and Tasikmalaya," Public Relations of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a press release received by Republika.co.id, early on Saturday.

The epicenter of the quake which struck at 23.47 pm local time was located six kilometers southeast of Bantarkalong city, Tasikmalaya district, West Java at a depth of 120 kilometers. The intermediate-depth earthquake located on land, but near the beach.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a 7.3 Richter scale seismic activity in Cipatujah, West Java on Friday at 23.04 pm local time. 

"Three aftershocks recorded until early on Saturday at 01.05 am," Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Moch Riyadi said in a statement received by Republika.co.id.

Meanwhile, according to US Geological Survey, the magnitude was 6.5 Richter scale.
