REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TAIPEI -- An absconding Indonesian caregiver was arrested in Taipei Wednesday on charges related to dumping the body of her newborn son in a barrel of food waste, police said.

The body was discovered by the son of pig farmer after the barrel of kitchen waste was transported by a New Taipei-based environmental services company to a farm in Taoyuan City, police said.

The farmer immediately called the police, who said they traced the food waste back to a restaurant in Taipei and reviewed security camera footage of the area close to the where the barrel had been picked up.

Based on the video footage, the police said, they began a search of the community around the restaurant and picked up a suspect, an Indonesian woman who had been employed as a caregiver in Taiwan but had absconded.

During questioning, the woman admitted that she had given birth to a baby boy Aug. 28 but said he showed no signs of life and she did not know what to do. She later decided to put the body in the barrel of kitchen waste, she said.

The woman, identified as 30-year-old Titik Suryani, was handed over to the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office and charged with abandoning a corpse.

Under Taiwan's Criminal Code, the maximum penalty for damaging, abandoning, disrespecting or stealing a corpse is five years in prison.
