REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALU -- Chief of the National Police General Sutarman will deploy some 294 thousand policemen to secure the presidential election on July 9, 2014.

"The police will be helped by the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) and the civilian Public Protection (Linmas) security guards," Sutarman stated here on Wednesday.

To support the police, the TNI will deploy 23 thousand officers and Linmas 1.3 million people across the country.

The police are coordinating with the General Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) and the General Elections Commission (KPU) to secure the implementation of the 2014 presidential election.

General Sutarman hoped that the public can peacefully participate in the presidential election without pressure from any parties.

"There should be no pressure or money politics during the election day," the police chief emphasized.

Sutarman also reiterated that the police personnel will remain neutral during the presidential election.

With regard to the shooting incident that targeted the North Coastal Poso police sector in Poso District, Central Sulawesi, General Sutarman remarked that the incident must not hinder the implementation of the upcoming election.

"The provincial police must carry out preventive measures to avoid a similar incident from occurring in the future," he added.

General Sutarman is on a working visit to Maluku, Southeast Sulawesi, Gorontalo, and Central Sulawesi to evaluate the preparations for the implementation of the presidential election.

Indonesia's democratic presidential election will be contested by two pairs: Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa, and Joko Widodo (Jokowi)-Jusuf Kalla.

Prabowo Subianto is a retired military general and the chairman of Gerindra (Great Indonesia Movement) Party, while his running mate, Hatta Rajasa, is a former coordinating minister for economic affairs and the chairman of the National Mandate Party (PAN).

Jokowi is Jakarta's governor and a cadre of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), and his running mate, Jusuf Kalla (JK), is a former vice president and a senior politician of the Golkar Party.
