REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TIMIKA - Head of Civil Aviation on Department of Communications and Information Technology in Timika, John Rettob said an airfield will operate soon in Ombani, in Mimika regency, Papua.
"To open an airfield in the highlands with mountainous topography, the team of Freeport forced to cut and fill the mountain," he said on Monday.
PT Freeport Indonesia built an dthe development began in 2012. The airfield development is intended to provide convenient access for local residents.
Similar airfield was build by the company at Kampung Tsinga which has operated since 2011. Mulu airfield which officially began operating in Februari 2012 has a length of 600 meters and width of 18 meters. It has been routinely landed by 'Pilatus Porter' aircraft and also 'Twin Otter.' A number of facilities also have built by Freeport, such as terminals and other offices.
