REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan has estimated that the number of people using public transport during the holiday season this year was more than those using private cars.

"According to our estimate, between six to seven million people used motorcycles or cars while only a quarter of them were from Jakarta," he said at an open house at the vice president's palace here on Wednesday.

He informed that the number of people using public transportation service such as planes, trains and buses could reach 17 to 18 million across the country.

The minister stated that the interest of those traveling by air this year could be the highest, compared to those traveling by land or sea.

"Compared to all modes of transportation in the history of Lebaran (Eid), this year the number of those traveling by plane will be the highest in the category of public transportation service," he added.

According to data collected by his office, users of air transportation rose by 7.62 percent to 4.6 million, up from 4.3 million in 2015.

A total of 3.7 million people used the ferry service, 3.54 percent more than the 3.5 million who did so in 2015.

The number of train passengers jumped 4.63 percent to 4.1 million, up from 3.9 million in 2015.

Ships attracted 2.9 percent more passengers, or 910,191, compared to 883,681 in 2015.

Drop was only recorded in the land transportation service, where numbers fell 2.7 percent to 4.57 million from 4.7 million in 2015.

"This shows that people have started valuing their time and have acquired better buying power than last year," he noted.
