Former Minister of Religious Affairs passes away

Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs from 1993 to 1998, Tarmizi Taher, passed away in Jakarta on Tuesday at the age of 77 years old.

Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs from 1993 to 1998, Tarmizi Taher, passed away in Jakarta on Tuesday at the age of 77 years old.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs from 1993 to 1998, Tarmizi Taher, passed away in Jakarta on Tuesday at 04.15 at the age of 77. He left a wife, four sons and five grandchildren.

"He has been ill since the end of 2011. He was taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) last Friday," Taher's youngest son, Dicky, said on Tuesday.

Taher is buried in Kalibata Cemetary, East Jakarta, on Tuesday afternoon. In his life, Taher was known for his bright ideas. After graduating from medical school Airlangga University, he joined the navy as medical officer.

Taher was promote as head of Armed Forces Mental Up-building Center. He ended his military career when he was appointed as General Secretary of the Department of Religious Affairs for 5 years, before being appointed as Minister in 1993. After leaving his ministerial position, Taher held other public appointments, including Indonesian Ambassador to Norway and Iceland.
