Government accelerates repatriation of Indonesians from Syria

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, CAIRO - Indonesian Embassy in Damascus, Syria, is in the state of emergency following the escalation of armed conflict in the country. "We ask central government to immediately evacuate all Indonesian citizens in Syria through Lebanon," Culture Functions for Indonesia's embassy in Beirut, Ahmad Syofian, said in wrtitten statement on Wednesday.

As many as 600 Indonesian citizens are still in Indonesian Embassy in Damascus. They will be evacuated to Indonesia gradually. Government recently has repatriated 633 Indonesian citizens in Syria through Damascus then continued to Beirut and Jakarta.

Indonesian Ambassador to Lebanon, Dimas Samodra Rum, said about 156 Indonesians had arrived in Beirut last week and 70 of them evacuated to Indonesia on Wednesday. Meanwhile, other 198 citizens will depart from Syria. They are scheduled to arrive in Beirut on Friday. 

Coordinator of Repatriation Team at Indonesian Embassy in Beirut, RA Arief, said the evacuation ran smoothly. The stock of food and other logistics is also sufficient to support the citizens in Indonesian Embassy.
