REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The National Disaster Mitigation Board (BNPB) has warned the people especially in the regions of the danger of flooding and landslides with the rainy season. BNPB asked the people and the government to be more careful in facing possible landslides.
"Heavier rains are yet to come. Danger of landslides is feared to grow," Head of the Center of Data and Information and Public Relations of BNPB Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said here on Tuesday.
Sutopo said rainy days will last until early next year and rainy days will peak in January next year. Based on data from BNPB, there were already 2,076 natural disasters causing 4,165 lives lost and missing until October this year.
In October alone there were 171 disasters including 52 cases of flooding, 49 cases of forest and bush fires, 41 cases of strong winds, and 20 landslides with 42 lives lost and missing.
On Monday, three people were reported killed in landslides that hit the village of Selalejo in the district of Nagekeo, East Nusa Tenggara. Tini Thadeus, head of the NTT regional office of BNPB, said the accident occurred at around 7.00 in the morning following heavy rain on Monday.
The three victims were identified as Paulus Loi (70), Paulina Muku (45) and Damanus Labo (25), Tini said.
