5.2 magnitude quake jolts northwest of Ternate

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MANADO -- An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale hit the waters of Ternate in North Maluku Province on Thursday. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed the natural phenomenon.

The epicenter of the quake that struck at 3:39:51 p.m. local time was located 130 kilometers northwest of Ternate, at a depth of 10 kilometers, 0.93 degrees north latitude and 126.21 degrees east longitude.

"The residents of Manado and Bitung felt the earthquake," Sulut Edward, on-duty staff of the local BMKG station, pointed out.

Earlier, an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale also hit the waters of Lampung Province before dawn on Thursday (May 10), according to the BMKG.

The epicenter of the quake, which struck at 4:25 a.m. local time, was located 127 kilometers southwest of Pesawaran in Lampung at a depth of 10 kilometers, the agency noted on its official website "www.bmkg.go.id".

The agency said the quake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.

There was no immediate report of material damage due to the quake.
