REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TANGERANG -- The Tangerang District Government's Manpower and Transmigration Office (Disnakertrans) in Banten Province regularly monitored 1,650 foreign workers employed by several companies in Tangerang.

"In accordance with our duties and functions, the surveillance was carried out in case of those (foreign workers), who had registered to work at different companies or institutions," Secretary of Tangerang District Government's Disnakertrans, Bambang Hendarto, said here on Friday.

Hendarto pointed out that these foreign workers mostly worked as teachers, corporate managers, experts or in skill transfer.

Most of them were found working in companies in the sub-districts of Kelapa Dua, Kosambi, Cikupa, Balaraja and Curug. A large number were found working as lecturers at several universities in the sub-districts of Kelapa Dua and Curug, he added.

These workers had come from China, the United States, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia as well as India, among others.

The number of foreign workers has been rising every year in the Banten Province at the western end of Java island.

A member of Commission II of Banten's Provincial People's Representative Assembly (DPRD), Fransisca Sagita, estimated that around 10,000 foreign workers earn their livelihood in eight districts and cities in the Banten Province.

Since the number of foreign workers was set to have risen threefold, conducting such surveillance on a regular basis has become necessary to prevent any misuse of work permits.

Inflow of a larger number of foreign workers was owing to the fact that they were required to handle several national and international projects in Lebak District, Banten Province, while those from China were needed to work in power plant projects.

Hendarto reiterated that Tangerang's Disnakertrans conducted the surveillance periodically and also undertook direct inspection of the workplaces to prevent any misuse of work permits.
