REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) DKI Jakarta chairman, Syarifuddin Abdul Gani asked everyone to not associate mosques with radicalism. Jakarta Provincial Government should not focus on the mosque, but to preachers allegedly spread radicalism.

"Don't blame the mosque, but the preacher," said Syarifuddin on Wednesday (June 6).

Syarifuddin said mosque is a holy place for Muslims worship. He assessed as an inanimate object, mosque can not be a subject in the spread of radicalism.

He stressed the image of Islam will be tarnished if the issue was addressed to the mosque instead of the preacher. Therefore, Jakarta Provincial Government must avoid mosques from preachers who teach radicalism or hatred.

Syarifuddin also asked the issue must be handled seriously. The preachers must be given direction to not spread radicalism or hatred, Syarifuddin added.

Earlier, Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno confirmed around 30 mosques allegedly became places to spread radicalism. The Bureau of Education, Mental, and Spiritual (Dikmental) and Jakarta Muslim Charitable Donations Board (Bazis) have the list.

"We will lead many activities there, said Sandiaga on Tuesday (June 5).

Sandiaga argued, one of the causes radicalism grows is injustice. It is implemented to young generation and becomes beliefs, until it develops into understanding.

Based on the assumption, Sandiaga decided to visit those mosques. He also argued, radical understanding can be ignored by generating economy at the mosques. In addition, education and employment opportunities are required.
