Quake hits North Buton

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BUTON -- An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale hit North Buton district, Southeast Sulawesi province, on Monday night, according to the local geophysics station.

The epicenter of the quake, which struck at 07.48 p.m. local time was located some 35 kilometers northeast of North Buton at a depth of 10 kilometers, the chief of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) office in Kendari, Rosa Amelia, said on Monday.

The earthquake was felt by several people at the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale (MMI) I-II, he said.

There was no immediate report of material damage.

"We call on the public to remain calm and carry out activities as usual because the quake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami," he said.
