Alert! Garut disaster can occured in other areas

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- The Gadjah Mada University (UGM) has revealed the cause of the flash flood in Garut, West Java, based on the study of the various scientific fields.

"In addition to natural factors, the cause of the flash flood disasters in Garut few days ago was due to changes in land use that is not in accordance with natural conditions," said rector of UGM Dwikorita Karnawati at Yogyakarta, on Tuesday (27/9).

Dwikorita said the flash flood occurred because of Garut is like a bowl, surrounded by seven mountains of fire, so that the river estuary at a point. This condition was exacerbated by the silting of Cimanuk River watershed (DAS).

"Heavy rainfall, with the intensity of 255 millimeters, while previously it was also raining so the river experience silting and blockage of waterways," Dwikorita explained.

He said the phenomenon of flash floods and landslides in Garut could occur in other areas in Indonesia. Therefore, Dwikorita added, some authorities and the people are asked to raise awareness and anticipate the possibility of similar disaster.

He added that the results of the study were conducted by UGM from various scientific fields concluded floods and landslides in Garut due to natural and non-natural factor.

The government, residents, and parties are asked to always be alert with early warning.
