Govt and parliament urged to revise KPK's law

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Revision of Law on the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has been included in the priorities of national legislation program (Prolegnas) 2015. The Parliament and the Government each of them claimed that the proposal of revision were not their initiative.

Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives (DPR), Fadli Zon, said about the revision of KPK's law, surely the Parliament and the Government have been talk about it. In these talks, appeared the deal to revise KPK's law.

According to him, there was a conversation between the Parliament and the government to revise the Criminal Code Law and KPK’s law to be priorities. Revision of the two laws should be done as soon as possible.

"Parliament and the government should be equally encouraging, these revisions are something usual anyway," he said, on Wednesday, June 24.

Deputy Chairman of Gerindra Party said, all sides should open with the change. Therefore, the Parliament and the government wanted to have a better change in KPK. He said, there were some points that need to be revised in KPK law.

For example, about wiretapping by KPK which was considered too free. Supposedly, tapping was done through clear procedures. Besides tapping was also a matter of investigators, said Fadli, KPK could not hire independent investigators.

Investigators should have the expertise, and who have the investigation expertise derived from the police or prosecution. About SP3 problem was also required by KPK. SP3 in KPK was required so that there was a way out, if there was a case which was considered wrong.

Fadli added, KPK was not the only corruption eradication agencies. There were police and prosecutors. However, it must be admitted the institutional problems of corruption eradication agencies, i.e. between KPK, the police and the prosecutors.

"We want to fix KPK, but we also want to strengthen the police and prosecutor, so that they also can join to fight corruption," said Fadli.

After it authorized as draft bill of Prolegnas priorities in 2015, furthermore the Parliament will discuss the revision with the government. According to Fadli, the discussion of KPK's law revision was likely to be submitted to the relevant commission.

"To the Commission III, not to the committee," he affirmed.
