REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- DPR RI approved the government's proposal to grant an abrogation against former trade minister Thomas Triasih Lembong and amnesty for PDIP Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto. The approval was delivered during a joint press conference between DPR RI representative Sufmi Dasco Ahmad and Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas.
“One of the reasons is of course we want there to be unity to welcome this 80th (independence) celebration day (of August 17),” said Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas on Thursday (31/7/2025).
Abolition is known as a right of the President to abolish all the consequences of the abrogation of a court verdict or to abolish criminal charges against a convicted person, as well as to terminate it when the verdict has been executed.
This means that the case of Lembong which is currently still in the appeal stage is discontinued. Tom Lembong is known to have been sentenced to 4.5 years in prison and 750 million denta in connection with the sugar import case.
While amnesty is the act of pardoning or abolishing punishment given by a head of state to an individual or group of individuals who have committed certain criminal offenses. Hasto was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison in connection with the Harun Masiku case. Hasto has not filed an appeal. By granting amnesty, Hasto will break free from the noose of the law.
According to Supratman, consideration of abolishment and amnesty is in the interests of the nation and the state. “That's the ultimate,” he said.
In addition, this gift is important for knitting a sense of brotherhood among the children of the nation. “How to build this nation jointly with political elements, certainly with subjective considerations,” he said.
Equally important is that the convict had achievements and contributions to the nation.
Deputy Speaker of DPR RI Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said that the approval of the abolition and amnesty has been agreed and approved in a factional consultation meeting in DPR RI with the government. It was recorded, Dasco said, that 1,116 inmates were granted amnesty, one of whom was Hasto Kristiyanto. The House also approved granting absolution to Tom Lembong.
“DPR has given consideration and approval to Presidential Letter Number R43/Pres/07/2025 dated July 30, 2025 on DPR RI's request for consideration of granting absolution on behalf of brother Tom Lembong,” Dasco said at DPR Building, Jakarta, Thursday (31/7/2025).
RI President Prabowo Subianto is now waiting for a decree from the Indonesian Parliament. Once the letter arrives, then the stay will be published the President's decree.
