REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG, — Basarnas reported that efforts to evacuate flood-affected residents in Aceh were hampered due to interrupted road access, power outages, and unstable communication networks over the past two days.
The public relations officer of the Banda Aceh SAR Office, Nadia, revealed that SAR teams on the ground had difficulty providing regular reports of the situation because communication lines in some affected areas were cut off. “We are experiencing difficulties getting information because the network is cut off, and in some areas there are still power outages,” he said.
He explained that access to North Aceh could not be bypassed so the team that was originally sent to evacuate people in the area was forced to be detained in Pidie Jaya Regency. Weather conditions and waves of community reports make SAR personnel have to perform handling on a priority basis. “Currently, the head of the Banda Aceh SAR Office is still in the flood-affected area in Pidie Jaya Regency,” he said.
Information received by Basarnas until early Friday morning said that nine victims died as a result of landslides in Central Aceh. The victims were three people each in Paya Tumpi and Kampung Saling, two in Kampung Kelepak Mata, and one person in Kampung Tami Daling in the Natural Park tourist attraction area.
In addition, two residents were reported missing and could not yet be evacuated due to equipment limitations at the landslide site. Plus the rugged terrain conditions and the unstable ground are additional challenges in the search effort.
Nadia added that high community reports related to evacuation requests and searches for family members in a number of flooded areas caused the SAR team's activity to increase significantly in the last 24 hours. “Sorry if we sometimes don't respond directly to questions, because the conditions here are hectic as well. We will try as much as possible to provide the information we have received,” he said, asking people to pray that the weather conditions in Aceh improve soon so that the evacuation and search process can be carried out more optimally.
