REPUBLICA.CO.ID, PASURUAN — Tens of thousands of people attended the 70th Haul of Akbar Habib Ja'far bin Shaikhon Assegaf at Al Anwar Mosque, Pasuruan City. In eastern Java, Ja'far is known as an expert on the Quran and sufi order.
Habib Ja'far's Haul event begins with a reading of the Manakib or his biography, including the traditions and traits of Habib Ja'far worth mentioning.
In Manakib it is explained that Habib Ja'far was born in Dzulhijjah 1298 in the area of Ghurfah, Hadramaut. He grew up in the shade of glory and honor under the care of his father, Al Habib Shaykhon bin Ali bin Hashim Assegaf.
Habib Shaykhon himself was a pious ulema who practiced his knowledge and a godly guardian. He dared to speak the truth openly, not fearing the reproach of his detractors in delivering the Islamic proclamation.
Habib Shaykhon also had a collection of books which his son, Al Habib Alawi later compiled in a volume. He also has a book of verses containing good advice and wisdom.
In addition, Habib Shaykhon also had various dhikr, parts of which were quoted by Al Habib Abdullah bin Alawi Alattas in the book of Sabilul Muhtadin.
Habib Shaykhon died in Mukalla, one of the ports of Hadramaut, on 18 Rajab 1313 Hijri. Above his tomb was built a dome for which pilgrims were intended.
After being guided by his father and mastering Tajwid, Habib Ja'far then went to pursue knowledge with high zeal. He become student of many masters in Hadramaut, Mecca, and Medina.
In addition to teaching his father, Habib Ja'far also taught Habib Idrus bin Umar Al Habshi, Habib Nuruddin Sayyidinal Habib Ali bin Muhammad Al Habshi, Habib Ahmad bin Hasan Alattas, Sayyidina Husein bin Muhammad al-Habshi, Habib Muhammad bin Salim Asri, and Habib Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Al Muhdhor.
In 1319 Hijri, Habib Ja'far was determined to hejra, seeing the many good benefits of traveling. So, he went to Indonesia after settling for a year.
After leaving Indonesia, he went to Haramaian to perform Hajj and Umrah, as well as to make a pilgrimage to his grandfather, the Prophet Muhammad SAW.
Habib Ja'far settled there for eight years and memorized the Quran in Makkah Al Mukarramah based on cues from Habib Husein bin Muhammad Al Habshi and Habib Muhammad bin Salim Asri. Because, both got a premonition of Habib Ja'far's success.
After memorizing the Quran with the accompaniment of tajwid and perfection, Habib Ja'far returned to his Homeland in Hadramaut and stayed there for eight years. There, he undertook the task of becoming imam of the Jami' mosque and became a khatib.
After that, Habib Ja'far went to Tarim and settled there for two years while teaching at the prosperous Tarim Madrasah. Many students graduated from their studies.
In 1338 Hijri, Habib Ja'far returned to Indonesia and settled in Surabaya City. He was a frequent visitor to various towns, especially Bondowoso.
His teacher at Bondowoso, Habib Muhammad bin Ahmad Al Muhdhor converted him Habib Ja'far as the walking Qur'an. He did not allow anyone else to be a prayer imam if Habib Ja'far was present there.
Later, Habib Ja'far settled in the city of Pasuruan. Thus, the inhabitants and surrounding areas were happy with Habib Ja'far's presence in the city.
Then Habib Ja'far established various councils of knowledge that benefited and organized the sharing of hizb and wirid. Due to the goodwill of Habib Ja'far founded it, all these activities are still running to the brim and growing prosperity.
Habib Ja'far has a solid foothold in night prayer worship. He never sleeps except for a short time.
Habib Ja'far often recites the Quran. Among Habib Ja'far's dhikr in his powerful days was to recite the Quran daily. He also recited many verses and prayers to the Prophet, which were read throughout the day, all day, and night.
Habib Ja'far had a huge role in reconciling the parties at loggerheads. Very often he reconciles those who disagree and unites between mutually hostile parties.
Habib Ja'far also constantly guarded the way of life of the traditional scholar, as well as his grandparents from among the Alawiyyin. He does charity with merciful charity, adorns himself with their manners, and makes appearances with their appearance.
Habib Ja'far is like a copy of the earlier ulema who followed the greatest example of them all, the Prophet Muhammad.
