REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG -- Flooding submerged 210 polling stations in Bandung District, West Java Province, in the lead-up to the polling day on Wednesday. Flood leaving local election committees with no choice but to shift the venue to higher ground.

"Some 210 polling stations were engulfed by floodwaters today, largely in Baleendah Sub-district, while polling stations in other districts are not flooded," Chief of the West Java Provincial Office of the General Elections Commission (KPU) Rifqi Ali Mubarok noted at the State Building in Bandung on Tuesday.

Mubarok reported that the polling stations overwhelmed by flooding were located in the six sub-districts of Baleendah, Bojongsoang, Banjaran, Ciparay, Rancaekek, and Dayeuhkolot in Bandung District.

"The venue for polling in the six sub-districts will likely be moved to other areas owing to flooding," he pointed out.

One of the hurdles faced by the KPU is taking precautionary measures prior to the general elections on Apr 17 against possible weather anomalies in the rainy season, inclusive of downpour possibly leading to floods, he noted. Bandung is one of West Java's several districts currently inundated.

"Bandung District was the worst affected by flooding. The flooding (has compelled local election committees) to move the venue for polling from the flooded stations to safer areas. In other flood-affected districts, such as Indramayu, flooding could be prevented from submerging the polling stations," he added.
