1,091 climbers evacuated from Mount Rinjani

Of the total climbers, 723 are foreigners.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- A joint search and rescue team has, as of Tuesday, evacuated a total of 1,091 climbers stranded on Mount Rinjani, after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit West Nusa Tenggara on Sunday. Meanwhile, one hiker was killed in the incident.

"Since July 29 to 31, we have evacuated a total of 1,091 climbers. As many as 1,090 survived, and one was killed," a spokesman of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told the press here on Tuesday.

Of the total hikers, 723 are foreigners and 368 are Indonesians, he elaborated.

The evacuation process involved 244 personnel, comprising of the military, police, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), volunteers, and climbers.

"Today, six Indonesian climbers are still stranded in Lake Segara Anak. The joint evacuation team has started to move last night and found the six climbers," he added.

The body of Muhammad Ainul Takzim, a climber from Makassar who was killed in the incident, was evacuated in a helicopter.

The rescue team has also found six local residents in Susu Cave.

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit Lombok, Sumbawa, and Bali early on Sunday. The earthquake has killed 17 people as of Tuesday and injured 401 others. As many as 10,062 people are sheltered in 13 locations.

The tremor has damaged 5,448 houses, 15 education facilities, 5 health facilities, 55 worship houses, 37 kiosks, and 1 bridge.

Earlier, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and First Lady Iriana has visited East Lombok Regency. Jokowi and Iriana arrived in East Lombok at 7.30 WITA, accompanied by Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono, Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko, and West Nusa Tenggara Governor Zainul Majdi or usually called Tuan Guru Bajang (TGB).

Jokowi got report from National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) head Willem Rampangilei related to the emergency handling of the earthquake's impact. Jokowi and Iriana then went to evacuation camp at Madayin Square, Madayin Village, Sambelia District.

He wanted to make sure the earthquake impact can be solved quickly and properly, including provision of health-care assistance, availability of logistics and basic needs for refugees, and availability of emergency education services. Jokowi was also scheduled to meet with the disaster victims and hand over the aid.
