Soil cracks release sulphur odor after Poso earthquake

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, POSO -- Several spots of soil cracks releasing an odor of sulphur were found in the area of Lore Utara Sub district after an earthquake measuring 6.6 in the Richter scale jolted the area on Monday evening.

"We found spots of soil cracks that cut road access about the size of adult span (about 30cm long)," the Head of Lore Utara Sub district Yanson Tokare said here on Tuesday.

The mud with sulphur odor was found in Wuasa Village, Watumaeta Village of Lore Utara Sub district, and Palu City.

The earthquake damaged 20 houses in Wuasa Village as well.

A number of people in Alitupu Village and Sedoa Village of Lore Utara Sub district were also injured in the quake.

Tokare stated that the administration was yet to calculate the total loss after the quake.

The quake occurred at 23:33 local time causing panic among people. Most of them were worried due to recurring aftershocks.

The aftershocks occurred till Tuesday morning. The local administration appealed to the people to stay calm and alert.

The earthquake has caused severe damages in Napu area, the Head of Poso District Darmin Sigilipu added.
