Japanese investment up in North Sumatra

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MEDAN -- Japanese investment has continued to increase in North Sumatra this year reaching Rp1.731 trillion in value by the end of the third quarter of this year.

Currently Japan is the third largest investing country in North Sumatra , head of the regional office of the Capital Investment Promotion Agency (BPMP) Purnama Dewi said here on Monday.

Altogether foreign investments in North Sumatra were valued at Rp11.749 trillion by the end of the third quarter of this year.

Japan has invested not only in power generating facility but also in various other sectors, Purnama said.

Japan is one of 10 major investing countries in North Sumatra this year. The 10 countries include Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, the nether land , Britain , Hong Kong , South Korea , Australia and Thailand.

"Japanese investment has continued to increase but Singapore and Malaysia are still leadingt, she said.

Japanese consul general in Medan Hirofumi Morikawa said Japan has continued to seek expansion of cooperation with Indonesia especially North Sumatra.

"Medan already has cooperation in environmental preservation with the city of Kitakyusuhu," Hirofumi said.
