REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DEPOK -- University of Indonesia (UI) became the only representative of Indonesia at 200 best universities ranking in Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings' list 2016. Editor of THE Rankings assessed thousands of universities in 48 countries, namely the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) and developing countries, including Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand, the UAE, and others.

THE was the only global institution which was measuring performance of universities based in London. THE announcement was launched on 2nd December 2015 at 21:00 local time at the THE BRICS and Emerging Economies Universities Summit in New Delhi, India.

Editor of THE Rankings, Phil Baty, sent email of congratulations to UI via Directorate of Research and Community Service (DRPM). Baty said that University of Indonesia was ranked 171.

In his email, Baty explained that the scoring system of THE Rankings was using 13 indicators of performance, which was strictly similar to scoring system of THE World University Rankings. THE examined the strengths of each university in all of the majors, such as teaching, research, knowledge transfer, international assessment, and network industry.

Ranking method focused on indicators of research conducted by academicians. Five indicators used by THE were learning and teaching (teaching environment) by 30 percent, number and volume of research by 30 percent, number of citations by 20 percent, international collaboration on staff students and research by 10 percent, and network of universities to industrial sector by 10 percent.

"So the institution must have high standards of performance in all areas of teaching, research, international assessment and links to industry," Baty wrote..

Only 35 of 48 countries included in the list assessment could put their universities in the latest ranking of 200 best universities from THE. In August 2015, UI was ranked 79 of 100 best universities in Asia and ranks 310 world version of QS World University Rankings.
