REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BOGOR -- Indonesian elderly in 2020 was estimated to reach 28.8 million people or 11.34 percent of total population in the country. This number became a challenge to create healthy and productive elderly. The issue was discussed in "Bogor Senior Citizen and Healthy Funfest Roadshow 2015" in Bogor, Thursday (5/11).
"It takes effort to build a healthy, active and productive generation with all its potential. This effort starts from the womb, children, adolescence, adult and when people reach an advanced age," said Head of Health Department of Bogor, Rubaeah, Thursday (5/11).
He said reaching advance age was a natural process in human life that could not be prevented. Indonesia was one of five countries in the world which has the highest number of elderly.
In 2010 the number of elderly reached 18.1 million people or 17.6 percent of total population. In 2014, the number increased to 18.8 million people.
"Indonesia is predicted to have 28.8 million elderly in 2020," she added.
Bogor City Government provided elderly-friendly health center that allowed the elderly to obtain healthcare without having exhausted queue with other public patients. Rubaeah said, the facilities provided would not be optimal without the efforts of the elderly in maintaining their own health.
