REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, QUITO -- A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck southeast Ecuador on Tuesday and was felt in several cities in the Andean country, according to the country's Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic (IGPN).

The moderate quake occurred at 6:19 am local time (1119 GMT) in Guayaquil, a coastal city in Guayas province, at a depth of 70.98 kilometers (44 miles), said Ecuador's Geophysical Institute.

The tremor was reportedly felt in the cities of Manta, Ambato, Cuenca, Santo Domingo, Riobamba, Loja and Portoviejo, among others, sparking panic.

People in those areas felt the impact while buildings swayed when the earthquake hit, though there were no reports of casualties or damage from the quake.

Ecuador is in a region of frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Last October, a 5.8-magnitude quake struck Ecuador's border city. Two month before that, a 5.1-magnitude quake hit the country's capital city of Quito, killing two and injuring eight.

An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale jolted 29 kilometers south of Ndoi Island, Fiji at 16:39:38 GMT on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 579.19 kilometers, was initially determined to be at 20.9165 degrees south latitude and 178.6562 degrees west longitude.
