REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Jakarta Metropolitan Police will conduct "Sympathetic Operation" to support the Asia-Africa Conference (AAC) activities to be held in Jakarta and Bandung, West Java.

"We certainly hope the 21-day operation would support and ensure the success of the international event," Jakarta Metropolitan Police commander Inspector General Unggung Cahyono said here on Wednesday.

He noted the operation will be held from April 1 to 21 for improving the public's traffic discipline.

He added that persuasive approaches such as reprimands will be adopted during the operation with the hope that it will change the traffic condition in Indonesia.

According to him, ensuring smooth and orderly traffic flow is important because Jakarta will be the host of the event from April 21-23.

He stressed the operation is also aimed at improving the traffic police's service.

The chief of the presidential staff, Binsar Panjaitan, stated in Bandung that the local government's preparations for the AAC events have been progressing well.

"They are good. I see that the preparations have improved compared to the situation three days ago," he said when inspecting a rehearsal at the Pakuan State Building.

He remarked that 95 percent preparations at the Merdeka Building, which will be the venue of the AAC's commemoration event, have been completed.

Meanwhile, preparations along the route, from Savoy Hommann Hotel to Merdeka Building and Bandung Grand Mosque, of a historical walk event have also been almost finished.

According to Luhut, the final rehearsal of the 60th commemoration events of the AAC will be held in Jakarta on April 16 and in Bandung on April 17 and 18 in the presence of President Joko Widodo.

The posters of two world figures, Soekarno and Nelson Mandela, have been put up around the Merdeka Building on Jalan Asia-Africa, Bandung, to mark the 60th anniversary of the AAC on April 24.

The posters of the founding fathers of Indonesia and South Africa are displayed side-by-side along the thoroughfare, which will be the center of the commemorative activities on Wednesday.

The poster of the first Indonesian President Soekarno carries the words "New Asia-Africa is Born" on a red background while that of Nelson Mandela, with a green background, states "Nothing is Impossible."

The messages, which were statements made by the two world leaders, had a major impact on the foreign policies of Asian and African countries during that time.

The Merdeka Building was the venue of the AAC in 1955 where the leaders declared "The Ten Principles of Bandung."

The building and its surrounding areas have been decorated to welcome state guests and participants at the AAC's anniversary event.
