Democratic Party supports direct election

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Democratic Party officially announced its support for direct elections for regional head (Pilkada). As majority party at the House of Representatives, Democratic Party will influence the decision-making process of election in the House Bill.

"We put 10 requirements. If all of these are put in the Bill, so that Democratic Party will support the direct election," Chief Executive of Democrat Party, Syarif Hasan said recently.

Some of requirements are a public test for the integrity and competence of regional head candidates, the efficiency costs of regional election and campaign activity, including its restrictions. Next, prohibition of slander and smear campaign, accountability of campaign funds, as well as money politics.

According to Hasan, this decision is taken by one of reasons, the direct election occured in period of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who is Chairman of Democratic Party. However, the party wants the improvement system to reduce the negative effects of direct election. On Sunday evening, Yudhoyono spoke about election bill. He is prefer the direct election than indirect election.

Democratic Party's decision will make the party with PDIP, PKB and Hanura getting majority votes, if the election legalization have to go through the voting mechanism. The final decision is scheduled on September 25 in a plenary session at Parliament.
