REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BOGOR -- The Government of Bogor Regency, West Java, targets Pongkor National Geopark Area to be included in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Global Geoparks (UGGP).

Acting Regional Secretary (Sekda) of Bogor Regency Suryanto Putra in Cibinong, Monday (6/5/2024), revealed that the development of Pongkor Geopark has been included in the Regional Development Plan (RPD) of Bogor Regency for 2024—2026 as one of the priorities.

He explained that the Bogor Government has listed it in the Regional Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMD) 2018-2023. However, there was a shift in the target for achieving UGGP to 2025, due to the limited number of UGGP proposals each year.

“It is necessary to synergize and collaborate with all stakeholders for the sustainability of the Pongkor Geopark area and for the sake of achieving UGGP,” Suryanto said.

According to him, Pongkor National Geopark is the great tourism potential of Bogor Regency and one of the nine National Geoparks in Indonesia.

Pongkor National Geopark has a total area of 130.15 thousand hectares covering 15 subdistricts, 172 villages, consisting of 12 multiobject geosites, 38 individual geosites, and 15 geosite-nuanced tourist sites.

Suryanto explained that there is a need for collaborative efforts of the government with stakeholders to realize the preservation of geological heritage, biodiversity and culture based on three pillars, namely conservation, education, and sustainable economic development of the community.

According to him, through the development of tourist destinations and other efforts, the existence of this geopark is expected to improve the well-being of local people in particular.

He hopes that academics from a number of universities, research institutes, professional associations, experts, and other stakeholders will contribute to fostering and supporting the community through partnership programs, advice or research or innovation results.

Suryanto is optimistic that the Pongkor Geopark is growing, visited by many tourists, so that it can promote economic growth and improve the well-being of the people.
