REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MEDAN -- Ramadhan Pohan, a politician of the Democrat party has been detained by police on charge of cheating.

North Sumatra police spokesman Sr. Comr Rina Sari Ginting said Ramadhan had borrowed Rp4.8 billion from a man identified as LHH Sianipar and Rp10.5 billion from another man M. Simanjuntak with promise to return the money in a week.

Ramadhan borrowed the money with a guarantee of checks to be cashed in after a week but it turned out his account was already drained of cash.

He used the fund to finance campaigns in his failed bid to win a recent election for Medan city mayoralty.

Police picked Ramadhan from his house in Jakarta after failing to appear after being summoned twice, Rina Sari Ginting said adding Ramadhan arrived in Medan on Tuesday night.
