REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, QUITO -- The death toll from a shallow 5.1- magnitude earthquake in Ecuador's capital region rose to four on Wednesday after a hospitalized man died and rescue workers recovered the body of a man killed in a landslide, local media reported.

The country's Interior Minister Jose Serrano said via his Twitter account that one of the wounded died in the Pablo Arturo Suarez Hospital in Quito, without giving further details.

A four-year-old boy was killed when sacks of rice fell on top of him, authorities said Tuesday.

Another two people were killed in two separate landslides, triggered by the quake which struck outside Quito at 2:58 p.m. local time (1958 GMT) Tuesday.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake occurred at a depth of 7.7 km with its epicenter located in Calderon, 23 km northeast of Quito. Damage was not widespread but landslides blocked several highways and more than 42 aftershocks were registered so far.

Anticipating fresh aftershocks, the Ecuadorian authorities have urged the pubic to keep calm. Since Tuesday night, the government has visited several shelters setting up to assist the affected and stressed families.

The Andean country's fire department, Red Cross, Armed Forces and Police Intervention and Rescue Group are combing through wreckage to look for the missing.
