Indosat shares rise 2.7 percent after Jokowi's statement

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Shares of PT Indosat Tbk (ISAT) was opened higher on Monday after Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo's statement to buyback shares of the telecommunication company. Indosat shares was opened at 3,810 IDR per share or rose 100 points or 2.70 percent on Monday morning.

In the third round of presidential debate on Sunday evening, Jokowi's rival, Prabowo Subianto criticized government's policy under the then Megawati Soekarnoputri's presidency to sell one of Indonesia's largest telecommunication operator, PT Indosat to foreign company. Jokowi said that he would buyback the company once he became the president. 

Currently Soekarnoputri is Chairman of Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP). Her government then claimed that the company was sold to finance the country's 2003 State Budget.

Today 65 percent of Indosat shares belong to Qatar Telecom (Qtel), while 14.29 percent of shares are owned by government and public (20.71 percent). While according to President Director of Indosat, Alexander Rusli any decision to sell the company was at the hand of shareholders. 

"So we are neutral in management," Rusli said.
